Many people are interested in the prehistoric past, and the history of the settlement and development of America. You can help here at Highland Hill Farm. We at Highland Hill Farm want to inventory, assess, and protect all archaeological sites and historical properties on the lands under our ownership. In addition to finding and studying sites,we want to protect them. Professional archaeologists, avocational archaeologists, people using metal detectors, casual collectors, and commercial looters all affect the level of protection that can be provided to our cultural resources. First, our archaeological sites are finite resources. They are like oil and gas wells, once drilled and drained, they are lost forever. Many archaeologists are interested in salvaging archaeological sites before they are destroyed by land-disturbing development or construction projects. Our large scale tree transplanting can not only remove artifacts from our location but can contaminate your location. Sort of like a false positive reading. All projects funded by federal money, or located on state or federal lands must receive archaeological investigations. Projects on private property are rarely studied, unless some form of federal permit is required for the project. That is why we act. We will do our best in uncharted areas. This is our goal in doing these digs besides money. On the hundreds of acres we own, a full site evaluation would costy millions. We feel our way is a better way. Have you ever wanted to go looking for artifacts? Our farm allows you to hunt for arrowheads! We charge for this service, but where else are you allowed to go and search?(seeRules for Campdigit).....
We have several locations in Nedw Mexico for you to explore. One ranch is the Flying X. Our Fling X Ranch is located in south central New Mexico. Our customers will want to visit this ranch when traveling in New Mexico. This is not a dude ranch, please understand this is a real operating western ranch with cattle and working modern-day cowboys, known as "The Flying X Ranch." The headquarters is located six miles west of I-25 on a gravel county road, 23 miles north of Truth or Consequences, in Sierra and Socorro Counties. The ranch is approximately 135 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico and 128 miles northeast of El Paso, Texas. This ranch is adjacent to our Elephant Butte Lake Ranch.
This ranch was once owned by Joe Panky, a well known New Mexico rancher. There is a published book, "Land and Cattle" published by the University of New Mexico Press, which was written by Jack Parsons and Michael Earney. It well describes "hard-country ranching." The book details the ranch and its former owners with 140 photos of the rugged beauty of the land and areas nearby. The first edition of "Land and Cattle" was published in 1978.
We also have 3 farms located near the confluence of the Susquehanna and the Chemung Rivers in Bradford County Pa. These farms are at the southern most part of what is now Athens Township. The river flats on our farms are what was once part of an Indian village known as Queen Esthers Town. This town was along the west bank of the of the river just south of the confluence. It exended for miles south along the river. As much as 5 miles of flats were inhabited. There are estimates of 70 houses being occupied in this vicinity. There is a historic marker along Rt. 220 which is on our property. It describes Queen Esthers Town. This area was also the site of the South Door of Iroquois Long House which was located near the confluence of the two rivers. The Indian settlement was destroyed on Sept. 27,1778 by Col. Thomas Hartley
Spiders have fangs, eight legs, and multi eyes that seems to come from a science fiction novel where one bit causes death. Be assured, spiders do exist but not all spiders kill people. Spiders do not want to waste energy and posion on a human target they they can not consume therefore, spiders are not a direct threat towards us. They actually help humans!! Spiders prey on other insects, produce silk, and have medical beneifits.
Did you ever sit on you back porch and swat at flys and mosquitoes? If you ever did, then spiders are on your side. Some spiders spin massive webs the stretch out and capture flying insects. These spiders webs are like natural bug zappers that do not need electicity. The unfortuant insect flys into the web and gets stuck. Then the happy spider pounes on the insect whom has a fresh meal.

Green Giant
Arborvitae are commonly used evergreen shrubs or trees useful in urban areas where low maintenance and durability is needed. Many cultivars with forms such as being globed in shape, columnar, or narrow pyramidal, tend to be near buildings, doors, and walkways. Other forms which are larger are used for screens and buffers that are planted in rows.
The form of arborvitae is small, medium, or large depending on the cultivar. Some reach 50', others only 3'. Most prefer full sun to partial sun. Planting in dense shade conditions should be avoided. A moist , well drained, loamy soil in full sunlight are ideal conditions for growing healthy arborvitae. These plants will tolerate rocky, clay, urban conditions of heat drought and pollution. The most important pest we have is bagworms which must be controlled to prevent complete defoliation. Some cultivars have multiple leaders which also prove to be a detraction for the plant. Pruning out multiple leaders in some cultivars is a simple remedy.
Our most popular Arborvitae is the Emerald Green arborvitae. Many people prefer to spell them Arbor Vitae . It is a bright light green color and narrow in shape. It makes a distinctive and impressive natural fence. It is easy to grow ,plant, and keep in shape.
The Hetz Midget arborvitae is a dwarf globe variety. This is a good choice for along walkways and gardens. This is a tough plant that is easy to install and not going to cost a lot. It will maintain its color in the winter and will withstand snow loads well. We carry these plants in 2 and 3 gal. pots. The prices on these dwarfs vary from $15 to $30 depending on size and quantity ordered.
Another small arborvitae that we grow in pots is the Rheingold arborvitae. This is a small globe shaped plant that has a golden green cast to it in the summer and a bronze winter color.
We also have the American Arborvita known as "Tiny Tim".This arborvita grows in zone 2 - 7. Its is a needled evergreen
in the Cupressaceae Family. It will grow in height from a half a foot to 1 foot tall. Its
spread will be about 1 to 1.5 feet. This is a plant that requires little work.
Selecting quality arborvitae for the home landscape :
When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium. Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root, that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old material from mail order companies since this material is more vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and burlaped. Don't buy any arbs bare rooted over 3' tall. Any plant larger should be balled and burlaped.
