Hostas of Highlandhillfarm

We stock at least 20 or more varieties of hostas in our nursery ready for pickup at any time. We divide many of our own clumps which helps us keep our costs to you low.

These Hostas are turning color in the fall, yet are still easy to transplant
These plants transplant easily. Hosta clumps have masses of small fiberous roots which allows them to transplant at most times of the year.

Growing Hostas is very popular. My wife uses them in her 3rd garde class at school to introduce children to green plant growing. These plants are shade tolerant. Hostas come in a wide range of colors and color combinations. Hostas can be solid in color or variegated with colors of blue, green, yellow, or gold. Hostas require little care after planting. There are over 2500 cultivars. With so many cultivars available I admit I don't know how to keep them straight and tell one close cultivar from another. I suggest that when you purcase them get up close and personal. Come to the nursery and examine the cultivars.

Hostas come from Japan, China, and Korea. They were introduced to Europe in the late 1700s and then came to the US in the middle 1800s.

A hosta plant reaches full maturity in 6 years, and its size depends on the cultivar. Look for features in hostas such as plant form, size, bloom, leaf color, variegation, and pest resistance. Some hostas also show seasonal foliar changes. Hostas that show "viridiscence" will change from light colors in the leaf early in the season to all green leaves as the season progresses. "Lutescent" will change from green to yellow, and "albescent" hostas will turn from yellow to white. Leaf color is affected by the amount of shade the hostas receive. Hostas bloom in summer. Hostas have spikes of lavender to white, lily-like flowers, and are quite showy. Some hosta flowers are fragrant.

Hostas are considered shade-tolerant plants, but don't do well in full deep shade. Hostas like morning sun and afternoon shade. In general, the blue-leafed hostas like shade, while the gold, yellow, and white-leafed hostas like more sun. Fragrant hostas grow best with 5 hours of daily sun. Hostas love rich organic soil. The recommended soil is well drained, has a slightly acidic pH, and has lots nutrients and organic matter.
