Sunset Red Maple (Acer Rubrum)

A deciduous tree in the Maple Family (Aceraceae)

The Sunset Red Maple is an outstanding shade tree that has reliable red fall color. A deciduous tree, pyramidal to rounded in shape, is fast growing to 45' high by 35' in width.. Leaves alternate, simple, thick, dark, glossy green, and in the fall is strongly 3-lobed, with brilliant orange-red to red color. The Red Maple produces fruit (seeds) that is an outstanding bright red. This plant can be planted in direct sun and is very tolerant of soils. Being a maple, it has a high tolerance to flooding. This plant is grown on our Fountainville, Pa. farm on Ferry Road. This property is in real deep clay and maples thrives there. So... don't worry if you have clay. It will be happy. The Red Maple is hardy to USDA Zone 4. Colors will reward you earlier and the Red Maple is more cold hardy than October Glory.

We raise hundreds of these plants. For the fall of 2006 we will start digging as soon as it starts to change color. You can stop in and select your trees in the field if you order 10 or more. You can be assured that you will get the tree your ordered because if you like we will call you when we....digit!!!!

Red maple is a desirable deer food and growth may be almost completely suppressed in areas of excessive deer populations(over 10 deer per square mile of forest cover). The deer love this plant. If you plant seedlings in high deer population areas, you will need to fence off the area, or spray repellents and use deer guards. For a one acre deer plot of just Sunset Red Maples, I would suggest in a high deer population area you will need to plant 2000-3000 tree seedlings per acre to get enough saplings to withstand deer browsing pressure. As some of the plants are damaged many will sucker and regenerate. After being established, this plot will become what I call "Legal Deer Bait". We would be glad to assist you with design, use of our loaner trans-planters and seedlings for your plot. We can also send our sons Jamie and Mike to help assist you on the installation of food plots.
