Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua)
Sweetgums are Deciduous Trees in the Witchhazel Family
(Hamamelidaceae)
Sweetgum is a member of the Witchhazel family. It is native to most of the lower two-thirds of the Eastern United States. It is prized shade tree because of its brilliant fall color. Sweetgum is a rapid grower and will deliever enjoyment in your lifetime. This is an adaptable tree. It is found naturally along river bottoms, floodplains, and moist woodland sites obtaining 80 feet in height and 40 feet in width. It will adapt well to dry or urban conditions. I don't like this tree near or over walkways where its gumballs create walking hazzards. Sweetgum is in the Witchazel Family and thus is related to Fothergilla. Sweetgums like a little water. If you have an area that has poor drainage but does dry up, this tree might be considered. The area should have a relativly neutral ph,yet dry up in the summer. Sweetgums like semi to full sun in zones 5 to 9.
